Honoring Their Fathers' Legacy: Meet Two Inspirational Daughters

In the heart of our Gold Star Race Program, we are privileged to introduce two women who are preparing to take on the challenge of their first full marathon. These women carry the legacy of their fathers with grace, resilience, and unwavering determination. They pay tribute to their fathers' sacrifices and inspire us all with their strength and courage.

Meet Kayla

“The loss of my Dad inspired me to discover my dream job, which is helping Gold Star families.” Kayla is the daughter of LTC Thomas Hawes who passed away due to a medical emergency on November 6, 2015. Kayla shares that her father coached her sport teams when she was a child and ensured that she had the best of the best to excel in sports. She is new to running but envisions her father attending her races and believes he may have even taken up running to support her. Kayla has taken the loss of her father and decided to work with Children’s of Fallen Patriots to support other Gold Star children with their educational needs. Kayla is looking forward to rejoining the military community, running for her father, and being a part of a meaningful team.

Meet Sydnie

“He was so patient and kind, pushing me and believing in me when I didn’t believe in myself.” Sydnie is the daughter of SGM William Lubbers who passed away when a train crashed into a Hunt for Heroes parade float on November 15, 2012. Sydnie shares that her dad had a successful career in Special Forces but was also the goofiest man she has ever known. Her dad loved to run and took her out on trails to train for her middle school track team. She is looking forward to the community engagement and connecting with a community that understands. Sydnie volunteered with her grandparents at a wear blue event and is now ready to take purposeful steps as she honors the service and life of her father.

Race Day Essentials

Throughout the 20-week program, our athletes engaged in monthly mentorship calls to discuss the highs and lows of their training, received tips from nutrition experts, explored the best race day tactics, went over race weekend details, and learned about the importance of proper gear.

At this point, we've encouraged our athletes to have their gear laid out from head to toe, ready for race day. Will they bring an extra pair of socks? What gels and energy chews will they consume? And let's not forget the strategic application of Vaseline or chub rub prevention!

Now, they're geared up and ready to go!

Wheels Up

Our athletes are taking to the skies as they begin their journey to San Francisco!

Safe travels, everyone!
