Honoring CPT John Hallett: A Tale of Friendship and Support

In the heart of every community lies a story of friendship, resilience, and unwavering support. For Mike Gilmartin, this narrative encapsulates his enduring bond with CPT John Hallett, a man whose legacy continues to inspire even 15 years after his passing.

John Hallett was more than a soldier; he was a beacon of courage, selflessness, and thoughtfulness. His commitment to serving others and his unwavering dedication to doing what was right left an indelible mark on all who knew him. From his days in Scuba school to the challenges of Ranger School, John exemplified mental toughness and a willingness to push himself beyond his limits.

For Mike Gilmartin, the memory of John's character and sacrifice has been a driving force in his life. Feeling a profound "call-to-action" to honor his friend, Mike embarked on a journey to pay tribute to John's memory in a meaningful way. The Mid-State Mile, with its blend of physical and mental challenges, presented itself as the perfect opportunity to honor John's legacy.

Mike completed the Mid-State Mile on 15 June, 2024.

Mike's journey goes beyond personal achievement; it's about honoring the fallen and supporting their families. Through his participation in wear blue programs, Mike has personally dedicated hundreds of miles to raising awareness and funding for the work of wear blue. Mike has completed two JFK 50-Milers, a backyard marathon, and several miles in between honoring his promise to CPT John Hallett that his children will always know his name.

As Mike prepares to take on the Mid-State Mile, he carries more than just his own determination and resolve. In his pocket, he will carry a guidon flag bearing John's name, a symbol of remembrance and solidarity. With each step, Mike will carry John with him, drawing strength from their enduring friendship and the memory of a man who exemplified the best of what it means to serve others.

In honoring CPT John Hallett, Mike Gilmartin reminds us of the profound impact that one individual can have on the lives of others. Through his commitment to honoring John's memory and supporting those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, Mike embodies the spirit of camaraderie and service that defines the wear blue community.

As we reflect on John's legacy and the enduring bond between friends, service members, and loved ones, let us also remember the importance of supporting those who have served and their families. In honoring their sacrifices, we honor the very essence of what it means to be part of a community built on courage, selflessness, and unwavering support.

Mike Gilmartin and John Hallett’s friendship story begins during their time as West Point Cadets. Mike and John both graduated from West Point in 2001.
