Two Sons Honor their Late Fathers along the 26.2 Mile Course in San Francisco
As we count down the days to the San Francisco Marathon, we're honored to introduce two remarkable athletes from our Gold Star Race Program (GSRP) who are running in memory of their fathers. These two sons, driven by love and remembrance, embody the spirit of resilience and dedication.
Meet Joe
“I want to grow to be more like him, relentlessly pursuing his goals and protecting his loved ones.” Joe is the son of COL Timothy Hoiden who passed away after a long battle of pancreatic cancer on November 10, 2018. As a child Joe recalls his mother and father’s example of staying in shape and being healthy, he and his siblings would ride their bicycles around the airfield as their parents ran. Joe shares that throughout his dad’s illness he never gave up and that he strives to be more like his dad whenever he can. Joe is currently in school for mechanical engineering and plays the guitar. He is a dedicated student and would spend all day studying new subjects if he could. Joe learned a lot about grit and persistence from his father and is ready to conquer the beast of a marathon.
Meet Quinn
“My father’s journey was one of both valor and humor, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to have known him.” Quinn is the son of MAJ Evan Mooldyk who passed away due to a medical emergency while deployed in Afghanistan on January 12, 2011. One of Quinn’s favorite memories of his father involves a rubber chicken that he and his siblings gave to his dad before a deployment. They received photos of the chicken from their father in various locations and the chicken became a legend within the unit. Quinn has followed in his father’s footsteps of service through his work at Children of Fallen Patriots where he ensures college funding to fellow Gold Star children. Quinn is ready to push himself as he runs with wear blue to honor his father’s service and sacrifice.
Training Milestones
With just 17 days to go until the San Francisco Marathon, our athletes are in the final stages of their training.
In the past few weeks our athletes have hit the peak of their training, completing the longest run they have run to date, the 20-mile training run. Now, our athletes focus is on maintaining their health and resting their bodies until they hit that start line on 27 July.
Stay tuned for more updates as we follow these athletes on their journey to the finish line. Next up, we introduce Michelle Moore, Rachel Maloney, and Samantha “Sam” Barnes.
