Volunteer Expectations
We invite you to be part of a meaningful experience that pays tribute to the service and sacrifice of the American military. Your time and dedication as a volunteer have a profound impact on both the athletes and our community. Here’s how you’ll contribute and what you can expect on the wear blue Mile:
Making a Difference
As a volunteer, you’ll help create a powerful and supportive environment that honors our fallen service members. Your presence provides comfort and strength to athletes and spectators alike, reminding them of the sacrifices made for our freedom. Each flag you hold, every cheer you give, and each moment of silence shared are poignant reminders of our collective respect and gratitude.
Arrival and Check-In
Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by our team and guided to the meeting location by wear blue staff members. At the check-in table, you’ll receive your wear blue t-shirt, pick up your flag, and enjoy some refreshments. Take a moment to walk the wear blue Mile, viewing the Faces of the Fallen Tribute posters in quiet reflection before the race begins.
Due to race schedules, volunteers can anticipate arriving between 5 and 6 am.
Dress for the weather. We will be on the line in rain, heat, snow and all types of weather conditions.
If you have a wear blue shirt, please wear it. If you do not have one, one will be provided.
Coffee, light breakfast food, and water will be provided.
Circle of Remembrance
Thirty minutes before the race, we’ll gather in a circle to share a moment of silence in honor of the fallen. If you feel comfortable, you’re welcome to speak the name of a service member you are honoring. Whether it’s a family member, a friend, or a name from the flag you hold, your voice helps to keep their memory alive.
During the Race
As athletes pass, your cheers and encouragement will energize and inspire them. Our staff will be nearby to assist, ensuring that you can take breaks as needed and have everything you require to support the runners.
Closing the wear blue Mile
Once the last athlete has passed, we’ll help you exit the wear blue Mile. You’ll carefully roll your flag, secure it, and hand it back along with the black ribbon to a staff member. As you depart, know that your contribution has left a lasting impact on everyone involved.
