Honoring Loved Ones, Running with Purpose

As we approach the Cowtown Half Marathon weekend, we celebrate the inspiring athletes of the Gold Star Race Program. This incredible cohort of runners is stepping onto the course with a shared purpose: to honor their fallen loved ones and carry forward their legacies through the powerful act of running. Each stride taken represents the enduring spirit of remembrance, resilience, and connection that defines our wear blue: run to remember community.

Throughout the weekend, wear blue will unite in tribute, with athletes, volunteers, and families coming together for a packed schedule of meaningful moments. From the Circle of Remembrance to the starting line and every mile in between, this race is more than just a physical challenge—it’s a living memorial, a demonstration of love and commitment, and a reminder that no hero is ever forgotten. Stay tuned as we introduce the remarkable runners who will lace up their shoes, pin on their bibs, and take purposeful steps in memory of those they honor.

First up, we’re proud to introduce three of these incredible athletes: April Hester-Derito, a Gold Star sister, and Bill Dietrich and Chrissy Kope, a father-daughter duo honoring their daughter and sister. Their stories of resilience and remembrance demonstrate the powerful connection between grief, purpose, and community.

Meet April

April runs in honor of her brother, PFC Charlie Hester, while promoting good health and achieving personal goals. Running connects her to Charlie’s joyful spirit, goofy sense of humor, and big heart.

Charlie, a gentle giant who loved animals and music, joined the Army to support his family. Though he never got his driver’s license, he proudly drove a Stryker in Iraq and shared a special bond with his fellow Soldiers. As a devoted father, he cherished time with his daughter and dreamed of having more children.

April and her daughters honor Charlie through veteran events and ceremonies, turning painful days into cherished memories. Through running, she celebrates his legacy and ensures his memory lives on for future generations.

Meet Bill

Bill Dietrich, a retired machinist and former High School Cross Country and Track Coach, runs in honor of his daughter, Becky’s legacy. For Bill, this race is not just a physical challenge but a heartfelt tribute to the fallen and a celebration of the memories he shared with Becky.

Becky, an inspiring and independent Navy nuclear mechanic, was drawn to service by her love for her country and her brother’s military career. Determined and full of life, she introduced Bill to running in his mid-thirties, transforming his perspective on fitness and life. Together, they cherished camping, fishing, playing sports, following their favorite teams, and enjoying board games and poker nights. Becky’s love for cooking and her warm, joyful spirit brought people together.

Each mile Bill runs carries the memory of Becky’s determination, courage, and the bond they shared. Running is his way of keeping her legacy alive, honoring her life of service, and reflecting the strength and love she embodied.
