Running for their Brothers: Tomy Cortez and Joe Higgins

As the Marine Corps Marathon draws closer, our Gold Star Race Program athletes continue to prepare for this monumental event. With just 20 days to go, they’ve reached the peak of their training, completing their 20-mile long runs. Now, they shift their focus toward staying healthy, maintaining their stamina, and mentally preparing for race day. These final weeks are about fine-tuning their progress and finding strength in the remembrance of their loved ones. Today, we highlight two more remarkable athletes and their stories of remembrance and resilience.

These two Gold Star Race Program athletes are honoring their brothers through a deeply personal and meaningful journey to the Marine Corps Marathon. Each step they take is a tribute to their fallen siblings—one, remembering his younger brother Cesar, who brought strength and joy to their family, with plans to run marathons together before he enlisted in the Army; the other, running in honor of James, whose deep love for the military and passion for service shaped his life. For both, this marathon is not only a physical challenge but also a chance to celebrate their brothers' legacies, turning their grief into a powerful act of remembrance.

Meet Tomy

I work for the Social Security Administration, and my free time is spent supporting my kids, one of whom is preparing for college. Participating in this program has been a blessing, as I’ve never given myself the time to properly grieve. When I think of my brother, I’ve always focused on the sadness of his passing. This opportunity finally allows me to remember him for who he was and what he means to me.

Cesar was the rock of our family, offering strength and support whenever needed. He always knew what he wanted out of life and encouraged me to live simply and without stress. Though he was younger, his wisdom was far beyond his years. He loved soccer and running, which makes this marathon the perfect way to honor him. We used to run together before he enlisted and had plans to complete marathons in various states when he returned. Cesar enlisted in the Army alongside our younger brother to support our parents financially. His caring heart and strong will are what I remember most.

Meet Joe

I am an analyst for the Department of Justice. I’m participating in the Gold Star Run Program to develop my running capabilities, connect with others who have experienced similar losses, and immerse myself in the wear blue mission.

James had a deep love for the military from a young age, driven by his fascination with history. He firmly believed in the values of the United States and even dreamed of one day becoming president. His other passions were flying and sports, and he hoped to become a pilot. James was dedicated to serving his country and helping others.

To our wear blue Family

We want to send our deepest support to all of our Gold Star and Surviving families. Your dedication to honoring your loved ones' legacies is truly inspiring and reminds us all of the strength that comes from remembrance. This year, we’re especially looking forward to one of our largest tribute wear blue Miles, where we will honor over 250 fallen service members.

In partnership with BlueCross BlueShield, 7-Eleven Cares Foundation, and JLL, this will be one of our most moving miles yet. As you come through the tribute wear blue Mile, know that we remember with you, and we stand with you. Hear the roar of our volunteers, see them wave our nation’s flag, and listen to the cheers. Join us in our Nation’s capital during Marathon weekend as we come together to honor, remember, and celebrate the legacies of our fallen service members. Go blue!
