Introducing Sommer Taha and Amie Kalsbeek – Carrying Forward Their Loved Ones’ Legacies

With less than two weeks until the Marine Corps Marathon, the anticipation is high as we introduce two remarkable members of our Gold Star Race Program: Sommer Taha and Amie Kalsbeek. Over the past 20 weeks, they’ve demonstrated extraordinary dedication to their training, a journey shaped by both personal determination and the powerful memories of their loved ones.

Meet Amie

Amie works in policy and spends her time outside of work with her daughter, Ayla, exploring the outdoors and learning new things. Running for wear blue gives me a tangible way to honor my husband and connect with other survivors. Running was something John and I shared, and continuing to do so helps carry his legacy forward.

John was my best friend, a leader, and one of the kindest people I knew. As a surface warfare officer, he often joked about having seawater in his veins. He was proud of his Filipino heritage and loved his family and friends deeply. We met while running for the Navy Marathon team at the United States Naval Academy, and although he was faster, I could run farther. His dad jokes, laughter, and warmth are things I miss every day.

Meet Sommer

I am a college student in my second year. My goal for this program is not only personal growth but also finishing something I’ve started. Running a marathon in honor of my father gives this journey deeper meaning. Though I never got to know him, I want to honor his memory and his sacrifice for our family and the nation. Crossing the finish line will be a triumph and a way to keep his legacy alive.

My father, Ayman Taha, was an incredibly intelligent and selfless person. Even though I didn’t know him well, everyone who spoke of him described his generosity and leadership. His willingness to take on the hardest tasks has always inspired me, and it’s something I strive to emulate in my own life, both on and off the field.

The past 20 weeks have been filled with early morning runs, long training sessions, and an unwavering commitment to preparing for this defining moment. Alongside their Gold Star cohort, Sommer and Amie have supported each other through the ups and downs, forming bonds that echo the spirit of remembrance and community. Now, as they approach the final stretch, their focus sharpens on honoring their heroes and inspiring others through their perseverance.

Sommer, Amie, and thousands of athletes will take on the challenge of the Marine Corps Marathon in just under two weeks. For our Gold Star and Surviving family members, each step is a tribute, every mile a reminder of those who gave all in service to our country. They run not only for themselves but for the memory of their loved ones.
